Born in South Africa and raised in Western Australia, my artistic journey has been deeply intertwined with the natural world. Growing up surrounded by the diverse landscapes of both countries, I developed a profound appreciation for nature as the ultimate source of inspiration.
My father, a Doctor of Ecology, sparked my passion for photography using his old Pentax B&W film camera, capturing the diverse ecosystems in both Africa & Australia. Whilst my mother’s 50-year dedication to painting has shaped my understanding of artistic expression, its processes, and techniques. It has, after all these years, also awakened a desire to start painting myself.
Studying photography at university allowed me to embrace the magic of traditional analogue film, a unique experience as digital photography became the norm. Missing the hands-on creative process and getting frustrated with the hours spent staring at a computer, I realised I needed to find a more tactile form of creativity and a new challenge. So, in 2023 I began my journey into painting intuitive abstracts and I will never look back.
My work is inspired by the contrasting visuals of both abstraction and minimalism. The abstraction of nature, the kaleidoscope of quiet chaos where everything has its place, where I can dive in and get peacefully lost. Then I am equally drawn to minimalism where lines and silhouettes within the composition speak to each other in silent harmony. I primarily use pigment ink and acrylics to create intuitive, dynamic compositions that reflect my inner explorations and connection to the landscape around me.
My extensive travels and time spent living in Australia’s remote areas, the Northern Territory, Queensland, and the Kimberley have further shaped my artist perspective. Often when I am painting, dormant visual memories of these wild places come out on their own and almost paint themselves into life.
My family and I have now settled in a picturesque coastal town in Southern Western Australia. Here, I have the chance to slow down and immerse myself in nature, pursue my passion for exploring wild places and creating art as a reflection of this love to share with others.
